Blinds and shading for Sandbaai

A fast-growing suburb in its own small sandy bay at the entrance to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley — newer building stock than Hermanus’s older core, and a spec to match.

What homes here are like

Newer builds, a valley mouth behind them

Sandbaai sits in its own small sandy bay at the western edge of Hermanus, right where the coast meets the entrance to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. It’s one of the newer suburbs in the greater Hermanus area — a fast-growing, family-oriented mix of residential and holiday homes, generally more recent building stock than Eastcliff or the Old Harbour core, close to the Whale Coast Mall and the valley’s wine-tasting rooms. The coastline itself is rock-pool and cove country, with safe swimming at low tide rather than Voëlklip’s open sand.

Sitting at the valley mouth rather than directly on the open cliff line gives Sandbaai a genuinely different wind read to Voëlklip: still fully coastal, but with the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley behind it funnelling its own cross-draughts on top of whichever of the town’s two prevailing winds is running. Newer glazing here tends to be larger and more contemporary than the older suburbs’ punched windows, which shapes the shading brief as much as the wind does.

What suits a Sandbaai spec

  • Aluminium venetians as the default on newer coastal builds, standing up to moisture and salt better than fabric.
  • Zip screens for entertaining areas that need to hold against valley-mouth cross-winds, not just the prevailing pattern.
  • Skylight and shaped-window blinds for the raked rooflines that show up more often in Sandbaai’s newer designs.
  • Motorisation fitted at build stage where possible, since new-build wiring makes this simpler than a retrofit.
